Get to Know the Provinces Project

You'll be researching, writing, and presenting about a Roman province of your choice.

  1. You will make a slideshow over the particular province of your choice

Each person will choose their own province. No group submissions!

Your Presentation Should Provide the Following Information about the Province:

  • Where was it in the empire? You'll need a map to make this clear.

  • What ethnic group lived there? What languages did they speak?

  • When did it become a Roman province?

  • What city was the capital?

  • Did the Romans conquer it or gain it peacefully?

  • Was it a senatorial or imperial province?*

  • Was a legion (roman army) based there?

  • What benefits did it give the empire? Why did the empire want to conquer it?

  • When did the Romans lose it?

  • What country / countries is it a part of today?

It should also include ONE slide with a very brief summary of your famous person.

2. Famous Ancient People Investigation

Your second task is to write a biography of the person associated with the province you chose. All these people are interesting, and many of these people have had entire books written about them, so chances are good you'll be able to find plenty of information.

Your essay should include the following information:

  1. When/where were they born? We may not know exactly where or when, but in your research, get as close an estimate as you can.

  2. Would they identify as "Roman?" or would they identify as something else? Hint: If where they were born was not a Roman province at the time of their birth, they probably don't identify as Roman at all.

  3. What led them to be powerful or influential people?

a. If they are an ENEMY of Rome, why did they fight the Romans? What battles did they win?

b. If they are a ROMAN, how did they come to power? How long did they live/rule the Roman world?

  1. How did they die? When/where did they die?

  2. What is the most interesting thing you learned about them?

  3. If you could ask them one question, what would you ask them, and why?

This is how your essay should look:

  • 12-point font, Times New Roman.

  • A minimum of 1.5 pages, double-spaced.

  • 1 inch margins.

  • A list of the sources you used to learn about your historical figure.

  • A header that looks like this:
